Season Showdown
09/22/09 1:53 PM

Week 3 is in the books, and what a wild one it was. There were some huge upsets that will have a major impact on the this week's rankings. Let's recap the action:
#1 USC couldn't take down Washington in real life, and guess what? They couldn't defeat them in Season Showdown either. Washington pulls the stunning upset by pulling away in the vs. Showdown Opponent and Trivia Challenge categories and the nation pitched in to take Allies & Rivals. Congrats to the Huskies, and with the Trojan's loss there will be another new #1 school this week.
One school that had an eye on that #1 ranking was the Florida Gators, they took on Tennessee and had a tremendous numbers advantage over the Vols. But Tennessee was able to rally the troops and the Vols pulled off the upset over the #3 ranked Gators. This one was very close as the Vols were able to take a slight edge in the vs. Showdown Opponent and Trivia Challenge categories which proved to be enough to get the win. Congrats Vols fans, you move to 3-0 on the season, Florida drops to 2-1.
The Gators losing is a shock, but it's not even the biggest upset involving an SEC school. #8 LSU took on 103rd ranked UL-Lafayette and I don't think anyone gave the ranked Ragin' Cajuns a shot in this one considering how outnumbered they were vs. mighty LSU. Well as the old saying goes "that's why the play the game" and for the Ragin' Cajuns this upset was absolutely stunning. There were 95 schools separating these two schools in the polls before this game, that gap is about to get a whole lot smaller.
The bad week for the SEC continued as Alabama must have figured they had last week's game vs. North Texas in the books and just mailed in the end of the week, but the problem is, no one told North Texas that. The Mean Green did the impossible and took down Alabama 3-2. Somehow Bama finds themselves at 1-2 on the season and will need to rebound strong this week vs. Arkansas.
Speaking of Arkansas, they had Georgia on upset watch all week long, but the Dawgs were able to take the lead in the vs. Showdown Opponent category and then use their numbers to their advantage, running away with the vs. CPU and Online vs. Nation categories.
To show you what kind of wild week it was, we are this far along in the update and we haven't even mentioned that the Red Raiders of Texas Tech took down the mighty Longhorns of Texas. Texas won the categories that a school their size is going to win, but the Red Raiders did the right thing and focused on the 3 categories that equalize the numbers. Congrats Red Raiders.
West Virginia vs. Auburn looked to be a great one at the start of the week and it did not disappoint. In a game where all 5 categories were up for grabs heading into the weekend the Tigers of Auburn were able to do enough to pull out the win. The Mountaineers gave it a great run but after the loss they drop to 2-1 and Auburn moves to 3-0.
Congrats go out to the Nebraska Cornhuskers for defeating Virginia Tech 3-2. For the first time in Season Showdown history the Hokies found a way to top Nebraska's trivia score, but Tech was no match for the Cornhuskers when it came to head to head games as Nebraska was able to take the vs. Showdown Opponent category to get the win.
Looking ahead to this week, and one can only hope that this week is as exciting as the week that just finished. Here are the top games to watch:
- Arkansas takes on Alabama
- Florida State takes on in-state upstarts USF in a battle of undefeated schools.
- Arizona State takes on Georgia
- Florida plays Kentucky
- Virginia Tech and Miami square off
- Oregon vs. Cal may go down as the game of the week -But the real game of the week will be Penn State vs. Iowa
And the rankings have been updated for this week:
